Union Square

Constructed in 1937, The Golden Gate was the longest suspension bridge until 1967 when the Verranzo Bridge was built (New York). Joseph Strauss conceptualized the suspension bridge idea in the early 1920s. It wasn't until after a collaboration between engineers and Build The Golden Gate Association did the city agree to a budget of around 30 million dollars and construction began. The Presidio - This national park rests on the northern part of the San Francisco Peninsula. The Presidio was oldest operating military base in the United States until closing in 1955. Ghirardelli Square - A popular tourist attraction with over 40 shops and restaurants and is next to Fisherman's Wharf. The Square is also home to the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop, literally famous for ice cream sundaes! Pacific Heights - This neighborhood offers panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz and the Presidio. The area is both a local and tourist favorite! Palace of Fine Arts - Originally designed in 1913 by Bernard Maybeck, Palace of Fine Arts was constructed as a part of the 1916 Panama Pacific Exposition. San Francisco hosted the exposition in efforts to regain status after the 1906 Earthquake and to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. After World War I, it became part of the San Francisco parks system. During World War II, the United States Army used the land as a type of repair shop. From 1967 through 1975, efforts were taken to fully repair the Palace to its natural state. The 1000 seat theatre was added in 1970 and has hosted a range of historic events: 1976 Presidential Debate, 1988 San Francisco Mayoral Debate, San Francisco Ballet, Journey, Celine Dion and more. Financial District - The area is marked by a cluster of high-rise towers that lay between Grant Avenue east of Union Square. Bay Bridge - The 4.5 mile, two span bridge was constructed in 1936 and connects San Francisco and Oakland. Believe it or not, an average of 270,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day! The Bay Bridge experienced structural damage during the 1989 Earthquake but has since been retrofitted. As of 2008, new construction is under way to expand the upper and lower decks. Embarcadero - The Embarcadero has undergone a contemporary cultural transition and is a popular hub for San Francisco dining and entertainment. Union Square - The home to some of San Francisco's nicest upscale shopping and nightlife available.
