The culturally thriving New Orleans came into the sights of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and tale of striking destruction was let loose. The Post-Katrina 'Personal Touch' Van Tour of New Orleans aims to take you closer to the affected sights for you to see and realize what made this disaster one of the worst human tragedies in recent American history. This van tour begins from the famous yet, notoriously paranormal place known as the Vieux Carré or the French Quarter. This side of the city was rather less affected than the rest of the city. The Saint Louis Cathedral, the colorful Pontalba row houses, the famous Jackson Square and the view of the river Mississippi, found at this old Creole city are some of the most beautiful sights to see. We also drive past the French Market, old US Mint, St. Louis Cemetery, located at the Esplanade Avenue and various stately mansions. This is followed by a pure architectural pleasure trip across the serene Bayou St. John, where you can view some very interesting houses, boasting of the year 1700’s rich architecture. The view of the worst civil engineering disaster can be viewed from the van itself as we reach the London Avenue Canal Breach. The city park is another sight to see in our van tour. The many flood walls and levees that failed to stop the disasters can be seen along the Lake Pontchartrain's shores. At the UNO campus, we explain the levee system to you. The view of the Causeway, the longest bridge, is also quite interesting from this campus. The tour also takes you to see the remains of the marina and the Southern Yacht Club. The second levee breach was caused near the 17th Street Canal that caused havoc to the beautiful Lakeview neighborhood. New Orleans East, and Gentilly were some of the other most disaster affected areas in New Orleans. Across the river Mississippi, we see the St. Bernard Parish, Lower 9th Ward and Industrial Canal, where we see the levee failures. The tour comes to a closure with a visit to the Musicians Village, the Superdome, New Orleans' downtown and Convention Center. The three and half hour van tour can be availed of on any day with a minimum 4 member group. The narrated tour informs about the city levee system failures in detail. The tour also includes a stop at Metairie for refreshment. You can bring a camera to take pictures of the sights you visit.
